Freeware update: Clipboard Master 2.6 with flexikeys for the quick conversion of hexadecimal numbers and ASCII code

Munich, April 11, 2012 - Jumping Bytes, creator of the cell phone sync software Mobile Master, has released version 2.6 of Clipboard Master, the free multi-clipboard for text, images and files. This update is especially useful for programmers as it makes it easier to work with hexadecimal numbers and ASCII code.

Jumping Bytes has introduced so-called flexikeys in Clipboard Master for this purpose: the flexikeys are keys or key combinations that start a defined action in specific situations, but otherwise work normally. Version 2.6 of Clipboard Master comes with two predefined flexikey functions: the conversion of decimal numbers to hexadecimal numbers (and vice versa) or the conversion into ASCII characters. Another new feature: numbers or text sections already included in text or source code can be converted based on the prior definition, e.g. from upper case to lower case.

Convert a number to the corresponding hexadecimal number (or vice versa):

Regardless of the program you are using, Word, Excel or Thunderbird: simply type the number e.g. 123 and press the # key. The hexadecimal equivalent is pasted instead of 123, in this case 0x7B (123 is deleted and 0x7B is pasted). The conversion in the other direction is possible in the same way.

Nearly any key or key combination can be used as a flexikey. For example, if the # is not available on a notebook or difficult to access, a different key can be assigned the same function.

Convert ASCII code to the corresponding characters via flexikey

In Windows, you can enter ASCII characters directly as ASCII code. To do so, press the Alt key (and keep holding it) and enter the ASCII code using the number pad. When the Alt key is released, the corresponding characters are pasted, e.g., "A" upon entering 65, "\" with 92 or "?" when 1122 is entered.

Notebooks or netbooks often lack number pads or they have to be activated with a great deal of effort. The new Clipboard Master flexikey concept helps with this: with the current standard settings, the Insert key pastes the characters of the corresponding ASCII code. That is: simply type in the ASCII code, press the Insert key and the corresponding character is displayed instead of the number, meaning that you type 1122 and press Insert to display "?".

Additional new features in version 2.6:

  • Conversion of marked numbers: if a number is already included in a text or source code, the flexikey does not affect it. Instead, Clipboard Master offers the option of simply marking the number and converting it to a hexadecimal (up to 64-bit), octal or decimal number based upon the prior definition. To do so, simply open the menu item "Convert Marked Text/Number" using the content menu of the tray icon tool and select the corresponding command.
  • Conversion of marked text: With this function, you can convert entire sections of text from upper case to lower case or vice versa all at once. Another option is to have all words begin with an upper case letter. This function is also available via the tray icon menu under "Tools".
  • Additional functions for hotkeys (key combinations): A key can now be assigned to start a program. For example, the standard browser can be started with the browser key, e.g. Firefox, and the combination Ctrl + Browser can be used to start Internet Explorer. Special keys such as computer, mail, browser, increase volume, decrease volume that only some keyboards have can also be assigned and used with Clipboard Master.
  • Collections revised: As soon as a collection is active, the "Paste" button is now displayed and can paste the collection to the desired location with a single click.
